Far East/Asia

Year opened: 1989

This nation of 235 million people is home to the largest Muslim population in the world. Eight-six percent of Indonesians adhere to the Muslim faith, while around six percent are Protestant, and three percent are Catholic.

After the tsunami of 2004, significant progress has been made in rebuilding the nation, particularly the Aceh region. Unfortunately, additional natural disasters in 2006 and 2007 caused billions of dollars of damage throughout the country. Earthquakes, flooding, tsunamis and other disasters are a constant threat since Indonesia is located in the “Ring of Fire.”

The nation has been going through economic reforms in the past several years. Reducing debt, improving the stock market, reforming taxes, and other aspects of the economic situation in Indonesia have improved the financial situation of many in the country. Still, nearly 18% of the population lives below the poverty line.

Mission Society missionaries in Indonesia work in a variety of areas. Community development, tsunami relief, humanitarian aid and other ministries seek to meet the physical needs of local people while witnessing to them the love of Christ.
