Guinea

Africa

Year opened: 1993

Guinea’s nearly 10 million residents have endured much recent decades. Since their independence from France in 1958, the country has struggled to become economically and politically stable. Although this nation holds 30% of the world’s bauxite reserves, the unstable political situation has caused many companies to abandon Guinea. More than 40% of the people live below the poverty line and 3.2% have AIDS. The unrest in neighboring countries of Sierra Leone and Liberia has spilled over into Guinea, creating a number of refugees and humanitarian emergencies.

Eighty-five percent of the population follows Islam, 8% are Christian, and 7% adhere to indigenous African beliefs. The Mission Society partners with Pioneer Bible Translators in Conakry, Guinea to translate the Bible into languages that have yet to receive the Gospel in their native tongue.
